Proposed Law Would Penalize Parents Who Allow Teenage Drug Parties
OKLAHOMA CITY (February 14) - Hoping to prevent additional tragedies
after a Tulsa youth died of a drug overdose at a party, lawmakers may
vote Tuesday to boost the penalties for irresponsible adults.
House Bill 2762, by State Rep. Fred Perry, will make it a felony
for adults to sponsor drug/alcohol parties that include teenage
attendees to face felony charges that can result in up to five years in
prison and a fine of up to $5,000.
"Adults who allow children to use drugs in their home are just
as guilty as any drug dealer," said Perry, R-Tulsa. "Turning a blind eye
when teenagers are provided an illegal substance is not acceptable,
especially when you invited the children into your home in the first
place."
The bill would allow the parents of any child who dies as the
result of a drug overdose at a party to sue the adults who supervised
the event.
Mark and Sareva Greenhaw, whose son died of a drug overdose
while attending a party at a friend's house, requested House Bill 2762.
House Bill 2762 goes before the House Corrections and Criminal
Justice Committee on Tuesday.
