OKLAHOMA CITY - A Central Oklahoma lawmaker recently was elected chairman of the Rural Area Development Task Force by its members.
Rep. Dale Turner will lead the group charged with improving the state's rural areas. "The Legislature has had its attention directed away from rural Oklahoma for awhile, it is time to refocus and get to work on developing these areas," he said.
Created last session by House Bill 1300, the task force has been directed to examine ways in which the state can:
* develop the rural economy;
* promote rural areas for purposes of business site location;
* assist existing efforts with economic development;
* modify existing incentives or create additional incentives
that are likely to result in the formation of business capital and jobs creation, directly benefitting communities located in rural areas;
* modify existing incentives or create additional incentives that promote and support individuals engaged in agriculture, aquiculture, farming, ranching, agricultural product processing and all forms of business activity that adds significant value to develop labor and capital originating from the state.
Turner, who authored HB 1300, explained that the task force will work to improve the rural economy, create new jobs and overall enhance the quality of life for rural residents. "We need to strengthen the infrastructure so there is a base to promote growth and create new jobs in outlying areas. I want the children and grandchildren growing up in these areas to have the option to stay in rural Oklahoma because there is a future for them," the Holdenville Democrat said.
Turner is a chairman of the House Committee on Economic Development and a member of the House Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development.
Sen. Jay Paul Gumm, Senate sponsor of HB 1300, was elected vice chairman of the task force.
